In 2003, the Japanese major at the University of Science and Technology Beijing(USTB) was established. It adheres to the teaching concepts of "solid foundation" and "wide employment", which is well practiced by the excellent and dedicated team of teachers, a sound curriculum, advanced teaching facilities, and increased options for oversea studies. The teaching team has worked out a method of international talent cultivating mode named "Major +" . Over the past 17 years, a large number of outstanding graduates with professional knowledge and international vision have moved on to greatly contribute on the world stage.
The teaching team consists of 13 highly educated full-time teachers and 5 dedicated foreign teachers. They provide students with high-quality courses and one-on-one tutoring. As of 2020, the team has evolved to include 1 professor and 5 associate professors. All the Chinese teachers have studied in prestigious Japanese universities for over two years, of which 70% have earned a doctorate degree. In addition, the faculty welcomes 3 visiting scholars aided by government sponsorship, 1 selected in the Beijing Higher Education Young Elite Teacher Project, and 1 special fellow of the “Japan Society for the Promotion of Science” (JSPS). All the 5 Japanese foreign teachers hold master's degrees or above in the field or relevant to Japanese language education.,
The Japanese major at USTB ranks in the top 20 among the 381 universities that offer Japanese as a major nationwide (Ref: www.nseac.com 2019-2020 National Japanese Major Rankings). USTB Japanese major instructors have made remarkable achievements in academic research, which includes 1 presiding over a national-level scientific research project and 8 at provincial and ministerial-level projects. In addition, many have been published: 7 published academic monographs, 3 have translated works, and more than 20 published Japanese professional textbooks. More than 100 teaching and research papers have been published in high-level academic journals at home and abroad, and the high-quality MOOC curriculum "Japanese Popular Culture" has been launched on the MOOC platform.
The major adopts a "Major +" cultivating mode for students. One of it is the joint cultivating program of 2+2 dual degrees. Students can choose majors such as economics, finance, communication and media, welfare and go to Japanese universities. They can gain dual degrees from USTB and the Japanese University after fulfilling graduation requirements. There are also 38 other major courses at USTB for students to choose from and study for dual degrees. With the basic major curriculum and the multiple elective courses of science and engineering, the Japanese major aims to consolidate student major foundation and provide competency-based cultivation.
