Overview

The Department of German Language and Literature at the School of Foreign Studies (SFS), University of Science and Technology Beijing (USTB), has been recruiting undergraduates since 2007. Our teaching faculty is a well-structured team that boasts solid professional knowledge and varied teaching experiences, among which 85% of our teachers have studied at renowned German universities. where 70% have earned a doctoral degree. In addition, we reinforce our faculty with 3 experienced German teachers every year, and regularly invite German experts to give lectures to USTB students .

Considering the specific characteristics of undergraduate training and major construction, the German Language and Literature Department establishes a talent training program which is based on the experience of undergraduate teaching. Through this program, we have constructed a systemic, scientific, and comprehensive model to cultivate versatile talents and have made a series of teaching and research achievements. In addition, relying on school’s General Education System and Minor and Second Bachelor’s Degree, a model of interdisciplinary training has been made. Meanwhile, the implementation of the Tutorial System in extracurricular practice, scientific and technological innovation, professional practice and other aspects have promoted student innovation and entrepreneurship.

Objectives

The objective of the program is to cultivate of the German Major’s language skills and critical thinking abilities. We are committed in assisting students achieve their German language goals focusing on 3 major points: Literature and Culture, German-Chinese Translation and German National Researches. We also strive to cultivate our students with capabilities in translation, research, teaching, press and publication, cultural exchanges, and management. Meanwhile, we also equip students with broad international perspectives, and a strong sense of innovation to international communication and the development of the economy.

Characteristics

1. The language training is divided into 2 parts: The basic stage and the professional stage. The basic stage values language learning, such as listening, speaking, and translation, while the professional stage integrates compulsory courses with elective courses to strengthen the education of professional knowledge of students.

2. There are no previous German Language requirements needed. The German Major values the development of basic language skills, such as listening, speaking, reading, writing, and translation. They dedicate their efforts on core courses, such as General German and German Intensive Reading. In addition, German Majors emphasize professional skills in experimental and practical curricula, highlighting the cultivation of practical ability of students.

3. The German Major has adopted a “Triple Pillars and Multi-directional” elective course structure. Students learn the 3 directional approaches to the German language: Literature and Culture, German-Chinese translation and German national research in a modular way. The new curriculum system is more in line with the actual needs of students, that conform to the realities of focused elective studying.

4. We strive to promote international communication and are dedicated to the international cultivation of our students. Students can broaden their international horizons through inter-school exchange, "3 + 1 + 1", "2 + 2", summer overseas programs and so on.
