The Center for Functional Linguistics at the University of Science and Technology Beijing (USTB) has been committed to the study of Systemic Functional Linguistics since its founding in May 2011. Since then, the center has established academic cooperation with universities both within and outside China, such as the University of Sydney, Macquarie University, Cardiff University, City University of Hong Kong, University of Michigan, University of Florida, Peking University, Beijing Normal University, and Sun Yat-sen University. The Center has hosted several large-scale academic conferences and symposiums and plays a key role in promoting the development of Systemic Functional Linguistics in China. The daily management of the Center, including teaching activities, researching and personnel management, is carried out under the School of Foreign Studies administration at USTB.
The Center focuses on both theoretical and applied studies of language, covering areas of Systemic Functional Linguistics, Multimodal Discourse Analysis, Critical Discourse Analysis, Functional Linguistics and Translation Studies, Computational Linguistics, Sociolinguistics, and Cognitive Linguistics.
