At 2:00 p.m. on August 31, 2019, a meeting for the parents of freshmen of the School of Foreign Studies (SFS) of 2019 was held in Room 106 of the Mechanical and Electrical Information Building. Participants included Chen Hongwei, Dean of the SFS, Zhang Qiuman, Secretary of the Party Committee, Vice deans of the SFS Wang Na and Wu Guanxiong, the Heads of the departments of English, Japanese and German, all the freshmen, and some of their parents. The meeting was presided over by deputy secretary Wang Yinghui.
At the very beginning, the freshmen and parents got an intuitive and preliminary understanding of the school through a promotional video.
Professor Chen Hongwei delivered a wonderful opening speech. First of all, she extended a warm welcome to the 149 freshmen and their parents. Then, she reviewed the history of USTB and the SFS, focusing on the “SFS—USTB—Beijing” platform, the “Foreign Language+” inter-disciplinary talents training program and other aspects. She also listed the school’s outstanding graduates in order to inform freshmen and their parents more fully about the achievements of the SFS talents training. Finally, she expressed her hope that the parents could guide their children to develop a broader perspective, and cultivate healthy personalities with positive energy.
Wang Na, vice dean of the SFS, gave a detailed introduction of the Implication Plan for Enrollment with Major Categories of 2019 to help freshmen and their parents understand the specific procedures of their major arrangements after admission.
Fan Yiting, assistant dean and head of the English Department, Wang Shuwei, head of the Japanese Department, and Wang Xumei, head of the German Department, introduced their majors in turn, showing the teaching methods and plans for students’ development .
Later, Wu Bingke, counselor of the freshmen, presented the basic contents of students’ work.He expressed the hope that the parents and the SFS would make joint efforts to promote the healthy and growth of each student. Li Junwen, one of the representatives of the parents, expressed his gratitude to the university and the school, and said that he had high expectations of the freshmen.
To answer students’ and parents’ questions, Q&A sessions for English, Japanese and German majors were conducted in Rooms 115, 113 and 107 of the Foreign Language Building respectively after the meeting,.
The parents’ meeting enabled the freshmen and their parents to have a more detailed and comprehensive understanding of the SFS, and the freshmen to have a definite plan for their campus life in the next four years. It is believed that with the active cooperation among the university, families and the efforts of the students themselves, numerous students in the SFS can grow into outstanding youth in the new era!
