At 8 p.m. on May 14, the School of Foreign Studies (SFS) held a “Face to Face” online meeting for English-major alumni in which Dong Zijin, an English-major student enrolled in 2012, was invited to share her experience. After graduating in 2016, Dong studied Marketing Science at the University of Pittsburgh from 2017 to 2019 and has worked in Huawei in 2020. Students enrolled in 2018 and 2019 attended the meeting. Participants also included Mr. Wang Yinghui, deputy Party secretary of the SFS, Wang Chunli, Party secretary of the school’s Youth League Committee, Mr. Zhou Hongyu, and Mr. Wu Bingke, deputy secretary of the school’s Youth League Committee. The meeting was held by Mrs. Wang Huan, the school’s career counselor.
At the beginning of the meeting, Dong gave a brief introduction of her own experience, and focused on the topic of “find your passion and keep going” by sharing her experiences and insights of college life . She said that firstly, the only way to success is to choose what we like and work relentlessly for it; secondly, we should learn to deal with our emotions and respect our feelings by doing what really makes us happy; and finally, everyone should make good use of their advantages and learn to “connect the dots into lines” by cooperating with others. At the end of the sharing session, she encouraged the students to try new things during their college years and never be afraid to make mistakes.
In the Q&A session, she urged the students to take internships during their college years in order to gain a sense of direction when searching for jobs. She also called them to develop an independent and goal-oriented way of thinking and form their own value system. The unreserved sharing of Dong infected every student in the room, and everyone was eager to raise questions. The students were still very passionate after theQ&A session and further communicated with her through WeChat.
Finally, the school’s deputy Party secretary Wang Yinghui concluded the meeting by expressing his gratitude to Dong and invited her to offer more career guidance for students.
This meeting enabled lower classmen to have a clearer understanding of their goals as well as deeper thoughts on their current situation and future plans. We believe that the students will devote themselves to their studies and prepare for their future careers with full confidence and enthusiasm as a result of the encouragement and advice of Dong Zijin.
