On the afternoon of December 19, Professor Jin Li, Wang Zuoliang distinguished chair professor of BFSU and editor in chief of Foreign Literature, was invited by the SFS to give the lecture on “Guidance on the application of NSSFC projects”in Academic Hall. Fan Yiting, Vice Director, was the host. More than 70 teachers and postgraduates attended the seminar.
First of all, from the perspective of reviewers, Professor Jin introduced the evaluation process of NSSFC projects, and analyzed the evaluation principles and mechanism of Social Science Fund in detail. She elaborated the core issues involved in the application of Humanities and Social Sciences projects from the aspects of project application requirements, research evaluation, and the process of application and evaluation. With data and examples, she introduced the topic selection, research methods, research significance and other related details involved in the process of application review, and emphasized the importance of good topic selection, good demonstration and good preliminary results as the three key elements of a successful application.
Secondly, Professor Jin shared her experience and writing skills of research proposal from the aspects of topic selection, project basis, research content, research plan, features and innovation. In her opinion, the research proposal is the “stepping stone” of the application. To pass the impartial project fund evaluation, it is necessary to practice and write an excellentresearch proposal. The applicant should be familiar with the format of research proposal, pay attention to the logic and clarity of the proposal. The proposal should show a wide vision, unique angle and prominent emphasis. In addition, she also gave some suggestions to boost the chances of success. Most young scholars should first publish good papers, and then apply for relevant projects on the basis of the research.
At the end, Professor Jin exchanged ideas with the researchers. The audience actively asked Professor Jin for adDeputy. Professor Jin generously shared her experience of the application. Her informative suggestions further deepened the understanding of teachers and students on the application for NSSFC projects, guiding teachers who are willing to apply NSSFC, especially those who have never done this before. President Chen Hongwei stressed the importance of the lecture. She hoped that the researchers be prepared research proposals in advance, so as to make new breakthroughs in the application for NSSFC projects in 2021.
The 10th International Symposium on Ethical Literary Criticism: Ethical Literary Criticism in the Age of Artificial Intelligence

As we all know, literature writing, as the performance mechanism of social consciousness, has been accompanied by the development of human science and technology. From mythology to The Three Body Problem, literature has never stopped thinking about the present and future of the age of artificial intelligence. Is it Utopia, dystopia or heterotopia brought about by high-tech represented by artificial intelligence? What is the relationship between literary ethics and science and technology in the age of artificial intelligence? What kind of ethics should we construct in the face of robots, cyborgs and possible superhumans? Artificial intelligence changes the material life of human beings. At the same time, it brings impacts on human beliefs, values and morality. These impacts and the problems reflected constitute the macro topic of “Ethical Literary Criticism in the Age of Artificial Intelligence”.
Under this background, the International Association for Ethical Literary Criticism (IAELC), together with the School of Foreign Studies (the SFS) of University of Science and Technology Beijing (USTB) and the editorial department of Foreign Literature Studies will jointly hold the “Ethical Literary Criticism in the Age of Artificial Intelligence: The 10th International Symposium on Ethical Literary Criticism” in order to further prosper the theory and practice of literary criticism in China, and to promote the international academic exchanges of Ethical Literary Criticism and interdisciplinary research. The symposium will be held in the SFS, USTB from October 16 to 18, 2020. We warmly welcome scholars from home and abroad to attend the meeting.

Experience-Sharing Session on Resume Production of the SFS

At 19:00 p.m. on April 3, the experience-sharing session on resume production of the SFS was held online. The speaker is Wang Huan, a career guidance teacher and undergraduate counselor of the SFS. More than 30 undergraduates and postgraduates attended the session.
Firstly, Wang Huan shared the sample resumes with the students for reference. Her sharing included three aspects: the principles of resumeproduction, the five indispensable parts and the delivery of resume. She believed that in terms of the principles of resume production, it was very important to have clear job objectives and the matched ability with the position. Then, she stressed the importance of personal information, educational background, internship and scientific research experience, awards and honors and personal skills in the resume, so as to deepen students’ understanding of resume production and clarify the content essentials of resume production. At the same time, she reminded students to pay attention to the details that were easily ignored in the resume production. For the process of resume delivery, she emphasized the notice of resume delivery and online application.
In the interactive part, students actively asked questions and exchanged views with Ms. Wang. Wang Huan answered questions about resume template, form and personalized contents, and gave her suggestions.
With the increasing demand of the 2021 intern recruitment, the need of students to deliver internship positions is increasing day by day. In order to help students get internship offers, the SFS specially held this sharing meeting. In this session, the students said that Ms. Wang had rich experience in resume production, which benefited them a lot.
Employment Assistance for 2020 Graduates of the SFS: The Training Session of Trial Teaching Skills Held

At 16:00 p.m. on April 9, the training session of trial teaching skills was held on Tencent meeting. The training was given by Yang Jiamei, head of campus recruitment of Beijing New Oriental School. A total of 70 graduate students of 2020 and 2021 from the SFS and students from other schools participated in the training.
From the perspective of teachers’ quality, Ms. Yang introduced to the students several elements that interviewers would evaluate in the process of trial teaching, including result orientation, teaching skills, classroom management ability, logical thinking, etc., and explained their meanings and scoring rules with examples. Ms. Yang pointed out that a trial teaching only lasts a few minutes. Thus the introduction part should be interesting enough to attract people’s attention, and the interaction part is indispensable for a lecture. So is the summary for the ending part. With several interview cases, Ms. Yang reminded the students of the details that they need to pay special attention to. Then she answered students’ questions. Students actively participated in the interaction.
Through this training, the students had a better understanding of trial teaching, and acquired more skills. It is expected that graduates can get offers they want in teacher recruitment.
The 18th Foreign Film Dubbing Competition of University of Science and Technology Beijing was Held

At 19:00 p.m. on May 20, 2020, the final of the 18th Foreign Language Film Dubbing Competition of University of Science and Technology Beijing was held. The competition was launched on April 6. 158 entries in English, Japanese and German were received from various schools. After the preliminary and second contests, a total of 14 players entered the final. The final competition was held through Tencent conference and broadcast live through bilibili, with about 5,000 viewers watching online.
Present at the competition were Wang Li (Secretary of USTB Youth League Committee), Jing Peng (Deputy Director of the Student Affairs Department of USTB Party Committee), Wang Xiaoning (Deputy Minister of the Military Department of the University), Shao Lihua (Deputy Secretary of USTB Youth League Committee), Chen Hongwei (Dean of the SFS), Zhang qiuman (Secretary of the SFS Party Committee), Wang Na (Deputy Dean of the SFS), Fan Yiting (Deputy Dean of the SFS), Wu Guanxiong (Deputy Dean of the SFS), and Wang Yinghui (Deputy Secretary of the SFS Party committee), and Wang Xumei (Director of the German Department).
Professor Chen Hongwei, Dean of the SFS, delivered a speech in English for the competition. She said, as pointed out by General Secretary Xi Jinping in his reply to the Pakistani students, “join hands with young people from all over the world to build stronger bonds among nations and promote the building of build a community of shared future for mankind”. With further globalization, China’s Belt and Road Initiative continues to advance in the new era, which puts forward higher standards for the foreign language proficiency of the youth. The foreign film dubbing competition provides an opportunity for foreign language learners and lovers to exchange views. She expressed her heartfelt thanks to the referees, contestants, audience and staff who participated in the competition.
The first round was a breakout game. In this round, the contestants dubbed the self-access video clips within 3 minutes, leading the audience to travel in different worlds.
In the second round, the contestants were to dub the designated clips. The organizers had prepared a few Chinese classic film clips. The contestants were required to translate them into the target language in the competition by themselves and then dub. The judges gave overall scores on the translation, dubbing and creativity. The audience enjoyed the creative lines very much.

Later, Wang Na, Deputy Dean of the SFS, commented that it was a challenge to organize contests online during the epidemic. The talent and self-confidence shown by the contestants came from their hard work. Their wonderful performance was really impressive.
In the third round of voting, the votes of judges and those of public judges constituted the final votes of the contestants. Foreign teachers from English, Japanese and German departments gave their suggestions and wishes to the contestants through videos.
